8 DAYS CULTURAL AND SCENIC DIVERSITY IN THE PELOPONNESE
Almost unbelievable but true. You start in Tripoli, the capital of the Peloponnese, whizzing around in the Parnonas mountains by the Tanos Valley down to the turquoise coast and enjoy these wonderful 5 days. Marvel at the ancient theater of Argos, the Lion Gate at Mycenae and at Epidaurus, the most famous place of worship of the ancient world. Enjoy the small fishing village of Paralia Astros, and the picturesque old town of Nafplion, where you will spend 4 nights and start do round trips. This includes Nafplion, with its beautiful promenade and the many taverns and restaurants in the old town which for many locals and visitors is the most attractive city in the country. So pack your bags and saddle up and go for it!
Itinerary:
DAY 1 ARRIVAL TRIPOLI
Flights from your point of origin to Athens. Transfer from the airport to Tripoli, around 2 hrs. Arrival at the hotel, room allocation, dinner and overnight at the hotel.
DAY 2 TRIPOLI ROUND TRIP TO THE CAVE OF KAPSIA 47 KM
Breakfast at the hotel, you can look forward to the first day tour through the plateau around Tripoli. Be amazed by the richness of the earth, for you will cycle through vast apple orchards, small orchards and scattered vineyards. Quite surprisingly, you are suddenly in front of one of the most important caves in Greece, which has been open to the public since December 2012. Marvel here at the beautiful stalactite creations and enjoy the coolness of the earth, then you can then get to know the selection of red, rose and white wines at a winery in Kapsia. Other highlights on this trip are the excavations of the ancient city of Mantinea, and a church built in 1972 with its idiosyncratic, absolutely surreal style with classical, Byzantine and Minoan elements and a dizzying array of columns, stained glass windows, domes and corners. DAY 3 TRIPOLI – PARALIO ASTROS, 57 KM
Breakfast in the hotel, and today you leave Tripoli, the capital of the Peloponnese and soon reach the ruins of the Temple of Athena Alea at Tegea. Through extensive olive groves you descend the Parnonas mountains by the Tanos Valley and come from lucrative 600 vertical meters down into the old picturesque fishing village Paralion Astros with its long pebble beach and tranquil waterfront restaurants. Shortly before your destination for the day but you should not miss a chance to visit the small monastery Loukos. The monastery was built in the 12th century and is surrounded by tall, slender cedar trees, behind which you cannot believe that the whitewashed monastery walls hide well-preserved frescoes from the 16th century in the small, 800-year old church. Opposite the monastery we have a short visit to the current excavations of the ancient city of Eve, where already 80 sculptures and approximately 1,200 square colorful mosaics have been uncovered. DAY 4 PARALION ASTROS – NAFPLION 45 KM
After breakfast we have a beautiful bike course along the coast road. Again and again you will be fascinated by the magnificent views of the turquoise sea, small fishing boats and the wide bay of the Argolian Gulf. Enjoy the easy ups and downs as you cycle first to the beach resort Mili, and enjoy a nice lunch on the beach and a swim. Then cycle through the fertile plains and continue to Argos, one of the oldest cities in Europe. Impressive here is not only the formidable fortress high on the mountain L??rissa, but also the archaeological site at the foot of the mountain. Marvel at the ancient remains of the carved into the mountain amphitheater, one of the biggest in Greece, before cycling the last flat miles to Nafplion. It is a dream destination with its narrow old streets, the beautiful promenade and the surrounding cafes of the marbled main square. Not without reason is Nafplion considered today as the most attractive city in Greece at such a scenic location. Overnight in Nafplion.
5TH DAY ROUND TRIP TO THE COAST 50 KM
After breakfast, we start from Nafplion with a magnificent round trip along the coast and cycle through the barren hinterland. The first trip you requires effort, because you cycle along the foot of the 200 meter high rocky outcrop, at the height of the extensive fortifications Palamidi, which is accessible via a fantastic walk almost 1000 steps. The small seaside towns along the coast, the beach and the sea lure with refreshments and an opportunity to stop at one of the taverns for lunch. We enjoy a ride on the nice way back across the small streets by gnarled olive groves through the hilly hinterland which lead back to Nafplion. Overnight in Nafplion.
6TH DAY ROUND TRIP TO MYCENAE 51 KM
Breakfast at the hotel. Today, after a few kilometers we have a worthwhile first stop at the mighty castle ruins at Tiryns, which was considered one of the most important centers in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Bronze Age. Then you roll through the lovely countryside, surrounded by orange and lemon groves, on to Mycenae, which were built, around 3300 years ago. See the magnificent fortress with massive walls. Mycenae was one of the most important cities of the ancient world, and was for a long time the center of Greek civilization. The uphill on the edge of the hillside is quickly forgotten as you marvel at impressive excavations and important finds. The world-famous Lion Gate weighing many tons and the shaft graves are among the great cultural and historical attractions of Greece and will inspire and amaze us. Overnight in Nafplion.
7 DAY TRIP EPIDAUROS 42 KM
Breakfast at the hotel. Today, our last bike ride in the comfort of your trip is begins with a transfer to Epidaurus, which counts on every trip to Greece for its historical significance. You will quickly understand why. You will be impressed by the huge and well-preserved, over 2300 year old amphitheater, which could hold 14,000 spectators in its time! Epidauros was considered a place of worship and pilgrimage site, and the shrine of Asclepius, the god of healing was dedicated. The theater was an important part of the healing process. Discover in Epidauros the remains of the ancient city with temples, porticoes, houses, shops and spas. After an extensive tour, you get back on your wheels. Enjoy the downward as path you dash through mountainous landscape and through the wide pistachio growing region back to the coast. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear sea water and look forward to another night in Nafplion. Overnight in Nafplion.
DAY 8 DEPARTURE NAFPLION
After breakfast, transfer to the airport of Athens, and fly home.
