Itinerary:
Day 1: TRAVEL TO VENICE, BOARDING A BOAT
Traveling from your point of origin to Venice and at about 13:30 board the boat. Enjoy your boat tour to Igoumenitsa. Overnight on board.
Day 2: IGOUMENITSA – VERIA – VERGINA – KATERINI PIERIA
Arrival in Igoumenitsa and then on to Veria, Apostle Paul famously preached in Veria. Visit the St. Paul forum. Continue to Vergina, which was made known all over the world just 30 years ago because of the excavations of the royal tombs. These unique findings, the tomb of Philip, father of Alexander the Great, lets us assume that the Vergina, then Aigai, was the first capital of Macedonia. Then go to Mount Vermion in the Monastery of Panagia Sumela. In this monastery is one of the three most important icons of orthodoxy – the image of the Virgin.
This monastery was built by Greek refugees in 1913 that had come from the Black Sea region in Greece. They brought the image of the namesake monastery from the mountains of Matsoukas (Turkey), Mela. In the evening we go towards Katerini, Pieria, dinner and rest overnight in Katerini.
Day 3: KATERINI PIERIA – KALAMBAKA – METEORA
After breakfast, we drive to Kalambaka. Guided tour of the famous, built on tall sandstone cliffs, monasteries of Meteora. These monasteries which hovered between heaven and earth were built in the 14th century. Visit 2 monasteries and clarification of the importance of the Byzantine-Orthodox monasticism in Greece and Eastern Europe. Then lunch at one of the numerous taverns in Kalambaka. Return to the hotel dinner and rest overnight in Kalambaka.
Day 4: KALAMBAKA – DELPHI
After breakfast we drive to Delphi, and have a guided tour to Delphi. The place owes its fame to the oracles. We will visit among others the temple of Apollo, the treasure of the Athenians, theater, stage, and museum with the famous statue of the Charioteer. Dinner and rest overnight in Delphi.
Day 5: DELPHI – ATHENS CITY – ACROPOLIS – MUSEUM – PLAKA
After breakfast we continue to Athens city tour. Then we will go by bus to Omonia and Syntagma Square, passing the Panathenaicos Stadium (break for photos), the Royal Palace, the Temple of Zeus, the Acropolis. Tour the Propylaea, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Nike and the Parthenon. Then go to University Street, passing by the house of Schliemann, the Academy and the University. Then we will visit the new Acropolis Museum. The rest of the day is free. After dinner, we rest overnight in Athens.
Day 6: ATHENS – CORINTH CANAL – EPIDAURUS – MYCENAE – OLYMPIA
After breakfast we continue towards the Corinth Canal (break for photos), then by bus to Epidaurus, a place of worship and healing of Asclepius. Visit the theater with its famous acoustics and the museum. Continue journey to the castle hill of Mycenae, which was excavated in the late 19th century by Heinrich Schliemann. We will visit the Lion Gate, the royal tombs, the palace, the new museum and the treasures of Atreus. Then then to Olympia dinner and rest overnight in Olympia.
Day 7: OLYMPIA – PATRAS – ANCONA
After breakfast, guided tour of the archaeological space of Olympia with the remnants of the once huge temple of Zeus, the older temple of Hera, and the workshop of the famous sculptor Phidias and sports facilities (Olympic Stadium). Continue to Patras. In the evening at 23:50 we board the boat. The journey continues by boat to Ancona.
Day 8:ON BOARD
Breakfast on board, the rest of the day is free. Enjoy your cruise. Dinner and rest overnight on board.
Day 9: ON BOARD
Morning arrival in Ancona, then you continue to your destination.
